Thermal bridges are areas or components within the roof or wall cladding assembly whose thermal insulation properties are inferior to those of the surrounding material, which allows local heat to flow through the building envelope. A common example of a thermal bridge would be a metal separator in a constructed cladding system. In general, all metal components act as thermal bridges due to their high thermal conductivity, unless special measures are taken to interrupt the heat flow by introducing a thermal insulation layer.
