Agarwood Oud Oils: a blog about oud oil and custom perfumes with oud.

Agarwood oils or otherwise commonly known as Oud oil or Dehnal Oud is a natural fragrance oil that is extracted from specific species of the Aquilaria trees. The trees naturally grow in the rainforests of India, Srilanka, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, China and surprisingly the Philippines.

It’s been used for hundreds of years in China, Japan, India and is commonly used in the Middle East for a long time, but only recently has it become popular around the world and the west. Depending on the country of origin, the agarwood resin and the oil that is extracted from it has a distinctive fragrance.

Let’s talk more about the different species of oud and how they are extracted.

Agarwood or Oud as it is commonly referred is found in many species of the Aquilaria trees and this species is different from one country to another. the most well known species are Aquilaria malaccensis, crassna, allagocha (our favorite), wallapatta, microcarpa, filaria, hirta, subintegra etc

How is Oud oil extracted?

Oud oils are mainly extracted in three ways, hydro distillation, steam distillation, supercritical Co2 extraction. The wood is grounded into dust and powder or shavings are carefully washed and left to soak for 3 days to 7 days (short soaking technique) or can also be soaked for 30 to 45 days. At Aromology we only use short to medium soaking techniques for the extraction of oud oils that we distill ourselves.

After the soaking, the materials are loaded on to copper or steel or glass pots and heated to generate steam that passes through a distillation system, the extracted is cooled by the condenser unit and the result is the collection of the oud oil in the output apparatus. The oud oils are left to mature for 6 months to few years before they are sold. Know more about Agarwood incense here.

Oud oil is a dark, viscous liquid. It is extremely difficult to categorize the oud oil fragrance by country and even by species, as the main character or the notes change from one country to another and significantly change depending on the methods and techniques used for the distillation of the Oud oils, there are really no two ouds oils that even from the same distiller smell exactly alike!

  • Apply a couple of drops or swipe from the glass rod that comes with the traditional attar bottles, directly on the skin on your pulse points. It is best to apply Oud oil right after a shower or bath.
  • In the Middle East I have seen local Arabs apply it on their face and generously on their body after shower.
  • Generally oud oils are dark in color and so do not apply directly on light colored clothes.

The most common scent notes that are found in oud oils are gourmand, anamalic, green forestry, slight salty and chocolatey, creamy, raisins, sweet tamarind, woody, fruity, leathery, berries, barnyard.

The two most popular oud oils in the world are Cambodian and Indian often referred to as Assam Oud oil.

Mixing ratios vary depending on how strong you want the final fragrance to be, but typically it’s best to start with equal amounts of aromatics and essential oils and half as many fragrant ones. You can always add more later if you want more power or potency in your creation! When adding essential oils don’t forget about their flashpoint temperatures – some may need heating/cooling before being added into this mixture so make sure everything is warmed up first then add slowly with care until desired scent strength is achieved.
